What is in this category
Axle shafts transmit torque from the differential to the wheel. When bigger tires, lockers and hard trail use add load, the weakest shaft in the line can twist or break. This category lists replacement shafts, outer stub axles, and complete upgrade kits for specific axle housings.
Listings give details such as axle type, side of the vehicle and spline count, which help you narrow down the right part.
Spline count and axle type
Spline count must match the differential or carrier you are using. The listings show 27, 30 and 35 spline shafts, which are not interchangeable with each other. A 30 spline shaft is stronger than a 27 spline of the same diameter because the core is thicker, which is why spline upgrades are common on Dana axles.
Axle type matters just as much. Dana 30, Dana 35, Dana 44 and Ford 8.8 each have different shaft length, flange and bearing designs, and some vehicle-specific versions exist, such as TJ, JK, WJ and ZJ variants.
Materials and design
Stock shafts are usually mild or medium carbon steel. Upgrades are often 4340 chromoly, heat treated for strength. Some shafts are 'reverse' or have different splines at each end, and CV-type front shafts include joints that wear. A Longfield-style axle is a high-strength design with a larger shaft end. If you swap one side only, remember the other side stays at the old strength, so consider doing both.
Fitment and installation
Axle work affects steering, braking and the ability to drive, so confirm fitment for your exact year, make, model and axle, and check the manufacturer's specifications. Left and right shafts are often different lengths, so check side and position. Bearings, seals and gear lash may need inspection while the axle is open.
Professional installation is recommended unless you are experienced with axle bearings and seals. Use the correct torque for axle nuts and hub bolts. Upgrading shafts will not by itself fix a weak differential, carrier or U-joint, so look at the whole drivetrain.
Where a listing mentions a Dana 44 JK or WJ rear shaft, those names refer to vehicle generations, and the shafts are not interchangeable between them. Comparing the part number against the axle tag or the manufacturer's application chart avoids ordering the wrong shaft.
Pairing parts and mistakes to avoid
Axle shafts rarely fail in isolation. When you replace one, inspect the whole shaft path: U-joints or CV joints, wheel bearings, axle seals, the differential carrier and the spider gears. Heavy tires and lockers shift the weak point from one part to the next, so a shaft upgrade makes the most sense as part of a plan.
- Check shaft length and the number of splines against both the carrier and the wheel hub.
- Confirm whether the axle uses C-clips or a retained bearing design, since this changes how the shaft is removed.
- Do not install a stronger shaft in a damaged or bent housing.
- Use fresh gear oil of the viscosity specified and inspect the old oil for metal, which can reveal wear inside.

Axle Upgrade Kits FAQ
What does spline count mean?
It is the number of ridges at the end of an axle shaft that mesh with the differential. A higher count with the same diameter usually means a stronger shaft, but the count must match your carrier. Higher counts also spread load across more teeth, but the shaft must still match the differential or carrier it is paired with.
Are chromoly axle shafts stronger than stock?
Generally, yes. Heat-treated chromoly steel such as 4340 is stronger than typical stock steel. Strength still depends on spline count, diameter and design. Always confirm the shaft is made for your axle type and spline count.
Do I need to replace both axle shafts?
Not always, but if you are upgrading for strength it makes sense to do both sides so one weaker shaft does not remain. Left and right can have different lengths.
Will an upgraded shaft fit any Dana 44?
No. Dana 44 axles come in different versions for different vehicles. Check the model-specific application, spline count and housing type before choosing. Front and rear versions also differ, as do vehicle-specific housings.
