Signs of a worn front axle
Front axle wear usually shows up as a growl or hum that changes with speed, fluid leaking from the inner seals, or play at the wheel when it is lifted. Worn wheel bearings can also cause the tire to wobble or heat the hub. Inspecting the seals and bearing surfaces before reassembly prevents the same problem from returning soon after the rebuild.
Seals and bearings are commonly replaced together during a service, since a new bearing in a worn housing can fail early. Clean the bearing surfaces, lubricate parts as the service manual directs, and check that the backing plates sit flat before fitting the hub.
