Overview
The G2 Axle and Gear 35-2045 is a master ring and pinion installation kit for the Dana 44 on the Jeep Wrangler TJ Rubicon. It is made for 2003–2006 Rubicon Dana 44 axles, and the TJ chassis covers the 1997 through 2006 Wrangler TJ years.

Setting carrier preload
Carrier preload and pinion depth determine how a Dana 44 ring and pinion wears, and they are set with shims and a crush sleeve rather than by feel. Because the crush sleeve compresses during setup, it is a one-time part and should be replaced when the pinion is set again. Set the carrier bearings with the correct preload before checking backlash, since the two adjustments depend on each other.
Work in a clean area with the housing held steady. Use a dial indicator to measure backlash and gear marking compound to check tooth contact. Replace the pinion seal and ring gear bolts as part of the job, and tighten the bolts in a crisscross pattern. Record each shim measurement so the setup can be duplicated after service.
