Description

Overview

The Poison Spyder 14-18-020 is a rear spreader bar kit for the 1997–2006 Jeep Wrangler (TJ). It is designed to add rear-seat protection to the stock Jeep roll bar, and Poison Spyder recommends pairing it with its Trail Cage Kit for a complete full cage.

The kit consists of a rear spreader bar and two center stringers. The stringers tie the main hoop of the stock roll bar to the rear spreader. All components are made from 1.75-inch OD, .120 wall DOM tubing. Each piece is CNC laser notched and NC-bent for a quick fit with no extra notching, fitting or grinding. The bar is bare steel with no coating.

Key features

  • Rear spreader bar and two center stringers for the stock TJ roll bar
  • 1.75-inch OD, .120 wall DOM tubing
  • CNC laser notched and NC-bent for quick installation
  • Designed to pair with the Trail Cage Kit for a full cage
  • Bare steel finish

Working with the rear roll bar

A rear spreader bar ties the back of a roll bar to the main hoop, adding stiffness where the stock structure flexes under load. The stringers carry that load forward, so the joints matter as much as the tubing. Before fitting, inspect the stock roll bar mounting points for rust, cracked welds and loose bolts, and correct those first.

Welding is the main variable. Clean the tube ends to bare metal, tack the pieces in place and check spacing against the Jeep before making final welds. Thin tubing can warp under heat, so work in short passes and let the steel cool between them. After the first few trail runs, look for hairline cracks around the weld beads and re-check the bolts that secure the roll bar to the frame.

  • Inspect welds after rough trail days
  • Re-torque roll bar mount bolts after the first outings
  • Keep a touch-up primer on hand for scorched areas

Questions & Answers

Does the 14-18-020 spreader bar fit a 1997 to 2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ?

Yes. It is a direct fit for the 1997–2006 Jeep Wrangler (TJ), including the Rubicon, Sahara, Sport, SE, X and 65th Anniversary Edition trims.

Is this kit the same as the LJ spreader bar?

No. The 14-18-020 is made for the TJ. The LJ uses its own rear spreader bar kit, part 15-18-020, for the 2004–2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (LJ). Match the model before ordering.

What is the tubing size on this bar?

The bar and its two center stringers are made from 1.75-inch OD, .120 wall DOM tubing. Each piece is CNC laser notched so it fits without extra notching or grinding.

How often should a roll bar spreader bar be inspected?

Check it after the first few trail runs, then every few outings and after any hard impact. Look for cracked welds, bent tubing and loose fasteners at the roll bar mounts, and address any problem before the next trip.
