Description

Overview

The Poison Spyder Lower A-Pillar Kit, bare steel, part number 13-18-011, is a pair of lower A-pillars that tie the cage A-pillars to the floor on a YJ, written for the Jeep Wrangler YJ, 1987 to 1995. The kit is sold as a pair, one driver side and one passenger side, and the gussets as needed are included.

The A-pillars are designed to support the forward section of the cage while fitting closely around the dash. That keeps the cage low profile, so it does not hinder entry or legroom. The pillars are the same components Poison Spyder uses in its production YJ cages.

Key features

  • Driver and passenger side A-pillars sold as a pair
  • 3/16 inch plate steel, CNC laser cut and precision brake-formed
  • Gussets come unwelded so they can be TIG or MIG welded to match the cage
  • Low profile fit around the dash
  • Same components used in Poison Spyder’s production YJ cages
  • Secures the cage to the floor

Roll cage welding basics

Weld-in parts depend on sound joints to hold up in a rollover. Before welding, clean the mating surfaces to bare metal and fit the pillars against the dash and floor so the gaps are even. Tack the joints in several places first, check the alignment again, then complete the welds in short passes so heat does not distort the thin plate.

Inspect each weld after the cage is finished, looking for cracks, undercut, porosity or uneven bead shape. Gussets should be welded on all sides of their joints where the design calls for it, so the load moves through the cage instead of concentrating in one spot. Recheck the cage after the first off-road outing, because new welds can crack if the joints were not fully penetrated.

  • Clean mating surfaces to bare metal
  • Tack and check fit before final welds
  • Inspect welds for cracks and undercut

Vehicle fitment

These A-pillars are written for the Jeep Wrangler YJ, 1987 to 1995. Confirm your Jeep is a YJ before ordering, since the pillars are shaped around the dash of that body.

Confirm your vehicle’s year, model and trim before ordering.

Installation notes

The pillars are installed by welding. The gussets arrive unwelded, so they are tacked and welded with TIG or MIG to match the rest of the cage construction. Fit the pillars against the dash before the final welds.

What’s included

A driver side and passenger side lower A-pillar, with the gussets as needed.

Questions & Answers

Are the lower A-pillars 13-18-011 for a YJ?

Yes. They are written for the Jeep Wrangler YJ, 1987 to 1995, and they are the same parts used in Poison Spyder's production YJ cages. Confirm your Jeep is a YJ before ordering.

Are both sides included?

Yes. The kit is sold as a pair, with driver side and passenger side lower A-pillars, plus the gussets as needed to complete the install.

Do the gussets come welded?

No. The gussets come unwelded so you can TIG or MIG weld them to match the rest of your cage construction, which keeps the joints consistent with the cage.

Does it need welding?

Yes. The pillars are a weld-in part, so the install requires welding to the cage and to the floor. The gussets are the parts left unwelded for you to finish.

Can the cage be welded by a home builder?

It can be, but structural welds on a roll cage need good fit-up, correct filler and full penetration. Practice on scrap material first, and consider having a qualified welder inspect the finished joints before relying on the cage.

How is the cage checked after an impact?

Inspect the welds, the gussets and the floor attachment points for cracks, bends or movement. Any damaged joint should be cut out and rewelded rather than patched, and the pillars should be checked against the dash for shifts.
