Description

Overview

The Trail Gear 144040-KIT is a billet aluminum seal housing kit for Trail Gear’s 9 in. axle housing, with three outer O-rings and a double seal on the inside.

The three outer O-rings seal the housing against the axle tube, so fluid cannot leak between the tube and the housing. The seals are built to hold during rock crawling and high-speed driving. The seal housing keeps differential fluid inside the differential, away from the brakes and tires.

Key features

  • Machined from billet aluminum
  • Three O-rings on the outer surface of the seal housing
  • Double seal on the inside of the housing
  • Tapered inner bore that lines up the axle shaft during installation
  • Set screw holds the seal housing in place

Axle seal care and wear

Axle seals work hard on trails. Water crossings, mud and grit can push contaminants toward the seal lips, and a worn seal lets gear oil escape while dirt gets in. Inspect the seal area after heavy-use trips, looking for seepage around the axle tube, an oil film on the brake side, or dried residue near the housing.

Gear oil level matters too, since a low level makes the seals run hotter. If the housing seals are replaced, consider the axle bearings and the axle shaft seal at the same time, because they are exposed to the same fluid. Clean the axle tube surface before fitting the outer O-rings, since grit trapped under them can prevent a clean seal.

  • Seepage around the axle tube
  • Oil film on brake components
  • Residue near the set screw

Questions & Answers

Is the Trail Gear 144040-KIT made for a specific vehicle?

The kit is sized for a 9 in. Trail Gear axle housing, so fit depends on the axle. Confirm fit for your vehicle's year, model and trim before ordering.

Does the seal housing stop fluid from leaking past the axle tube?

Yes. The three outer O-rings seal the housing against the axle tube, and the double seal on the inside keeps fluid from passing the axle shaft seals.

How is the seal housing held in place?

A set screw secures it so the housing cannot move or be pushed out when the axle shafts are installed.

How can I tell the seal housing is leaking?

Look for gear oil around the axle tube, on the inside of the wheel or on the brake components. Wipe the area clean, drive a short distance, then check again so any new seepage is easy to spot.
