Description

Overview

The Trail Gear 140321-1-KIT is a right-hand drop front axle housing kit with 3-link mounting. It fits 1995–2004 Toyota Tacoma trucks in Base, Limited, Pre Runner, S-Runner and SR5 trim.

The 3-link layout is built into the housing, which places its axle tubes above the housing centerline so the inner axles run low in the tubes, adding 3/8 in. of ground clearance. The tubes are 5/16 in. thick DOM steel with a 3 in. outer diameter. The knuckle balls are forged from 1035 steel and are built to resist closing or bending better than stock.

Key features

  • Right-hand drop front axle housing kit
  • 3-link configuration
  • Offset axle tubes for 3/8 in. more clearance under the tubes
  • Knuckle balls forged from 1035 steel
  • 5/16 in. thick DOM axle tubes, 3 in. outer diameter

Choosing a drop axle setup

A drop axle housing lowers the front differential and axle tubes relative to the frame, which changes how the front suspension sits and how much room there is under the vehicle. Lowering the axle tubes can add clearance over obstacles, but the change also affects steering geometry, driveline angles and the travel of the suspension arms. Before buying any drop housing, measure your current ride height and check how the new housing will work with your existing track bar, drag link and driveshaft.

Once installed, the housing carries the axle in a different position, so the joints and bushings that connect to it see new loads. Inspect the knuckle balls, seals and steering linkage after the first few trail runs and again at each oil change. Look for grease seeping from the joints, play in the steering, uneven tire wear or a clunk when the wheels turn. Those signs point to wear that is easier to fix when caught early.

Questions & Answers

Does the Trail Gear 140321-1-KIT use a 3-link setup?

Yes. It is a 3-link right-hand drop front axle housing kit, and the 3-link layout is the core of its design. Confirm link geometry against your vehicle's year, model and trim before ordering.

Which vehicles does this 3-link kit fit?

It fits the 1995–2004 Toyota Tacoma in Base, Limited, Pre Runner, S-Runner and SR5 trim. Other Toyota models and Tacoma years after 2004 are not covered. Confirm fit for your vehicle's year, model and trim before ordering.

How much ground clearance does the kit add?

It adds 3/8 in. of ground clearance under the axle tubes. The offset tubes are 5/16 in. thick with a 3 in. outer diameter, and the knuckle balls are forged from 1035 steel.

Do drop axle housings need other suspension changes?

Often, yes. A lowered axle changes the angles of the driveline and steering, so a drop kit is commonly paired with a driveshaft check and a steering alignment. Confirm the setup for your vehicle's year, model and trim before ordering.
