Keeping the hitch secure
A receiver mount relies on the clip and pin to stay in place, so those parts deserve regular attention. Make sure the pin is fully seated and locked each time the mount is installed, and check that the clip has not bent or fatigued. A loose pin is one of the more common causes of a mount working out of the receiver during a tow.
Steel mounts resist wear well but can rust where the finish is scratched. Touch up bare metal with a suitable coating, keep the ball threads clean, and store the mount dry when it is not in use. Inspect the mount after rough trails or unusually bumpy roads, since shock loads can loosen connections faster than normal driving.
