Overview
The Poison Spyder 17-03-030 is a standard width steel front crusher flare for the Jeep Wrangler JK in two-door and four-door models. It is sold as a pair. The flare replaces the thin plastic factory flares and the flimsy outer sheet metal they sit on, with heavy-duty steel that is laser cut and formed to the JK’s body panels.
The outer rub rail is 1.5 inch x .120 wall DOM structural tubing. DOM stands for drawn over mandrel, a tubing process that resists crushing, kinking and bending better than thinner welded seam tubing. The foundation is a 3/16-inch steel mounting plate, CNC laser cut and brake-formed to the subtle curves of the JK body, with countersunk holes for flat-head stainless steel hardware.
The top plate is 1/8-inch aluminum, hand formed around the flare to follow the JK’s body lines and give a factory appearance.
Every set comes with an inner brace set. The braces tie the flare into the heavier, thicker steel of the JK inner body tub, so impacts load the stronger structure rather than only the outer sheet metal. The braces are CNC laser cut and brake-formed. Outer-only flares can push in and deform the body on impact, which the inner braces are meant to prevent.

Paint and finish planning
Standard width flares ship as bare steel, so the finish is part of the install. Clean the mill scale and oil from the steel, scuff the surface, and prime before the topcoat or powder coat. Coat the mounting holes and cut edges too, since they are the first places rust starts.
The 1/8-inch aluminum top plate is hand formed around the flare, so it can be finished separately. Use a primer suited to aluminum before the topcoat so the paint bonds properly, and keep the finish matched to the steel so the flare looks uniform.
Check the inner brace set and rubber liners at the same time as the finish. Make sure the liners are seated to keep moisture and debris out, and inspect the coating in spring and after rough trail days to catch chips early.
