Overview
The Poison Spyder DeFender XC 5-inch tapered flare, part 14-02-075, is a bare steel front tube fender built for extra tire clearance on Jeep vehicles. It is designed to clear larger tires with a limited suspension lift while keeping a low center of gravity. It is formed from 3/16-inch steel plate and requires cutting or drilling during installation.
At the back of the wheel opening, the flare sits about 2-1/2 inches further back than a typical tube fender, and about 4 inches further back than stock Jeep flares. The wheel opening is 3 inches higher than on the standard DeFender. Most Jeeps can run 37-inch tires with no suspension lift and 40-inch tires with a couple of inches of lift, though each vehicle has its own clearance considerations.
The flare tapers from 5 inches at the back to about the width of the Zero Flare at the front, following the taper of the hood. It keeps the splash protection of the regular 3-inch flare, which keeps mud and debris off the side of the Jeep, and the narrow front edge preserves clearance for articulating tires on tight trails.
The DeFender XC suits builders who want larger tires without a tall lift and who are prepared to modify the factory hood and fit inner fenders.
Key features
- Extreme clearance design for larger tires with minimal suspension lift
- 5-inch tapered flare, with the front edge following the hood line
- Same splash protection as the standard 3-inch flare
- Wheel opening 3 inches higher than the standard DeFender
- Back of the wheel opening about 2-1/2 inches further back than typical tube fenders
- CNC laser cut and brake-formed from 3/16-inch plate steel for strength
- Mounting location for a 3/4-inch LED marker light
- Bare steel finish
Clearance and trail use
A front fender flare changes how the tire sits in the wheel well, so the main questions are how the tire moves at full steering lock and full compression. Tall tires can still rub the inner fender or frame when the suspension flexes, which is why the inner fender and hood work matter as much as the flare itself. Test steering to both locks and bounce the suspension slowly before going on trail.
Bare steel needs primer and topcoat to resist rust at cut edges. Check the mounting bolts and welds on the first trail runs, and look for paint cracks where the flare bends. Mud can pack behind a narrow front edge, so clean the wheel well after wet runs to keep the tire path clear.
- Check full lock clearance on both sides
- Watch the hood edge for rubbing
- Recheck fasteners after the first trail day

Installation notes
Installation requires cutting or drilling. The flare modifies the factory hood, and the DeFender XC Inner Fenders, part number PSC14-02-099, are needed to complete the install. Sort out the inner fender and hood work before mounting the flare.
