Overview
The G2 Axle and Gear 25-2012 is a minor ring and pinion installation kit for the Ford 9.75-inch axle, for the rear axle position.
G2 designs the 25-2012 for installers working on a newer vehicle that has no need to change the bearings. The kit gathers the small parts a ring and pinion installation needs, including a shim kit, a replacement pinion nut, crush sleeve, pinion seal, ring gear bolts, silicone sealer, thread locking compound and gear marking compound. G2 says these are the parts that auto parts stores rarely have. The ring and pinion gear set itself is not part of the kit.

Gear setup and break-in
Setting up a ring and pinion is a precision job. The pinion depth, carrier preload and backlash all depend on the shims and the gear marking pattern, so small changes matter. Work in steps, and check the contact pattern after each adjustment before moving on. Recording each shim change makes it easier to repeat the setup if a further adjustment is needed.
After assembly, the new gears need a careful break-in. Drive gently for the first stretch, avoid heavy throttle loads, and check for noise, heat or leaks. Recheck the ring gear bolts and the pinion nut once the gears have run, since the crush sleeve settles as the preload is set.
