Overview

Key features

  • Upper or lower king pin bearing shims
  • Front axle application
  • Dana 25 axle type

King pin shimming and wear

King pin bearings let the steering knuckle pivot on the axle, and shims set the end play so the knuckle turns freely without rocking. When the bearings wear, the knuckle develops play that shows up as wander, a loose steering feel and uneven front tire wear. Shims are used to restore the correct clearance, not to fill a worn bearing, so the bearing condition should be checked first.

Measure the clearance before choosing shims and fit them in small changes. Too much shim thickness can bind the knuckle and wear the bearings faster, so the aim is smooth movement with no free play. Lubricate the bearings during assembly and check the grease fittings for proper flow.

  • Play in the knuckle when the wheel is lifted
  • Uneven tire wear on the front
  • Wander or a loose feel at the steering wheel

Questions & Answers

Does the Crown JA006882 shim kit fit a Jeep Wrangler?

No. The Wrangler is not a model this kit fits. It covers Jeep and Willys models from 1941 to 1971.

Is the JA006882 for the upper or lower king pin?

It works in either the upper or the lower king pin position. Check your axle's king pin layout to see which shim set goes where.

What axle does the JA006882 kit fit?

It fits a front Dana 25 axle. The kit covers Jeep CJ, Willys and J-series models from 1941 to 1971.

How do I know if king pin shims need adjusting?

Check for play in the steering knuckle with the wheel lifted, or for wander and uneven tire wear. Adjust with shims only after measuring the bearing clearance, since too much thickness can bind the knuckle.
