Overview
The Dana Spicer 41886 is a nylon king pin bushing that rides on the upper king pin of a Dana 60 front axle. It is for one side only, so each knuckle needs its own bushing.
The bushing is made for Dana 60 and Dana 61 front axles, so identify the front axle before checking any vehicle.
Key features
- Nylon bushing material
- Rides on the upper king pin
- One side per bushing
- Front Dana 60 and Dana 61 axle types
How king pin bushings wear
Bushings sit between the knuckle and the king pin and carry the turning load every time the wheel steers. Over time the bore can widen, and the bushing can develop play that shows up as wander or a loose feel at the wheel. Looking at the bushing and the bore for scoring, grooves and side play during a teardown helps show whether the part is due for replacement.
Nylon bushings are often installed with fresh seals and retainer rings, since the knuckle is already apart. Check the upper and lower bushings as a pair on the same axle and keep each side’s parts separated. Make sure the king pin is clean and free of rust before pressing the new bushing in, because a rough surface can damage the new part right away.
- Look for scoring in the bore
- Check for side play on the king pin
- Replace bushings on both knuckles together
