Before you replace the seal
A king pin seal sits at the bottom of the knuckle and keeps lubricant inside the joint while keeping water, mud and grit out. Over time the lip hardens or tears, and a worn seal often shows up as grease pushed out around the knuckle or dirt stuck to the joint. When the seal fails, the bearing and bushing surfaces lose lubricant and can wear faster, so replacing the seal early is usually cheaper than rebuilding the knuckle later.
Because this seal sits at the lower joint, it is often replaced alongside the upper seal if that one is also worn. Clean the knuckle bore and sealing surface thoroughly before pressing in the new seal, and check the lip for nicks. Use a seal driver rather than a hammer so the seal seats square in the bore.
