Description

Overview

The Poison Spyder Hood Louver in bare aluminum, part number 17-53-011, is a hood vent for 2 and 4-door Jeep models that frees up airflow through the engine compartment. It is built from CNC laser-cut and die-stamped aluminum. No model years or chassis codes are named for it, so confirm the hood on your vehicle matches the louver before cutting.

On a trail, the engine compartment of a Jeep can overheat well before the rest of the vehicle, because slow speed moves little air past the engine. Trapped hot air at the top of the bay is the main problem a louver addresses. This one is designed to let that air out and pull cooler air through the radiator, which supports both coolant temperature and under-hood air temperature.

Key features

  • Bare aluminum finish
  • CNC laser-cut and die-stamped
  • Thick gauge aluminum sheet for light weight and corrosion resistance
  • Adds rigidity to thin hood sheet metal
  • Designed for 2 and 4-door models
  • Stainless steel fasteners and full-size template with instructions

Managing engine bay heat

Engine bay heat builds when the hood traps air around the engine and the radiator. A vent in the upper hood lets that warm air leave, and it helps most when the Jeep is moving slowly or idling in hot conditions. Hood louvers are one of several ways to manage that heat, along with keeping the radiator clear and the cooling fans in good working order.

Before cutting, look at what sits under the hood. Hoses, the battery, wiring looms and the air intake all need clearance from the cut and from the underside of the louver. Mark the position with the template, check the edges for sharp spots, and deburr the cut holes. A louver added to a hood that already rattles may also benefit from checking the latch and hinge bolts.

Inspect the hood and vent periodically. Look for cracks in the sheet metal around the louver, loosened fasteners, and any rattle that starts after a trail run.

Installation notes

Installation involves drilling and cutting the hood, which is the main job in the project. The full-size template and instructions show where the airflow holes go, and the stainless steel fasteners finish the mounting. Measure and mark with care before any cut.

At crawl speed the engine bay receives little moving air, so the openings do the most work when the Jeep is slow. Choose the placement with the template and the clearance under the hood in mind before drilling the first hole.

Questions & Answers

Is the bare aluminum louver 17-53-011 a 2 or 4-door fit?

It is sold for 2 and 4-door Jeep models. No model years or chassis codes are named, so check the hood on your vehicle against the template before cutting.

What finish does it come in?

It comes in bare aluminum. The finish is not coated, so any paint or powder coat would be a separate step done after the louver is fitted.

What does it take to install?

The job requires drilling and cutting the hood. The full-size template and instructions mark the holes, and the stainless steel fasteners hold the louver once it is in place.

Is the aluminum thick enough to stiffen the hood?

The louver is made from thick gauge aluminum sheet. That thickness adds some rigidity to the thin sheet metal of a Jeep hood, which can reduce hood wobble at speed.

Does a hood louver help with overheating on its own?

It helps by letting trapped hot air leave the engine bay, but it works alongside a clean radiator, working fans and sound cooling hoses. Heat problems that remain after fitting a louver should be checked within the cooling system.
