Overview
The Poison Spyder 19-53-012P1 is a black hood louver kit for Jeep Rubicon models, including the Gladiator Rubicon and the Wrangler JL Rubicon. The louver is cut into the hood to open airflow through the engine compartment, which helps the Jeep keep the engine cool.
The louver is made from thick gauge aluminum sheet that is lightweight and corrosion resistant. It is CNC laser cut and die-stamped, with a black powder coat finish. The louver is designed to help reduce hood wobble at speed.
The kit explains the engine heat problem. Headers, slow speeds, flex fans and the cramped space of the engine compartment can all raise under-hood temperatures, which can increase engine coolant temperatures and lead to overheating. The louver frees up airflow so hot air can escape and cooler air is drawn in through the radiator, which improves cooling for both the engine coolant and the under-hood air.
Installation is easy with the included full-size template, which shows where to cut the airflow holes in the hood. The kit requires some drilling and cutting of the hood, so the owner must be ready to modify the factory hood. Stainless steel fasteners are included.

Engine heat and airflow
Under-hood heat builds up quickly in slow traffic, on steep climbs and when headers or flex fans are in use. Airflow helps move that heat out of the engine bay, which keeps coolant and under-hood temperatures more stable. A hood louver is one way to add an exit path for hot air.
Louvers work best with a clear radiator path and a sound cooling system. Check the radiator, fan shroud and hoses for leaks or damage before adding a louver. The louver does not replace a healthy cooling system or a correct fan setup.
Cutting a hood changes its stiffness and wind behavior, so inspect the hood latch and hinges after the first drives. Look for paint cracks at the cut edges and touch up any bare aluminum to slow corrosion.
