Description

Overview

The Mag-Hytec AAM 11.5in High Capacity Cover (part AA14-11.5) is a finned aluminum rear differential cover for GM and Chrysler AAM 11.5 inch axles, with room for 5 quarts of gear oil.

Mag-Hytec builds its covers and transmission pans for heavy-duty recreational and service vehicles that need more lubricant and better cooling. This cover is cast from A356-T6 aluminum, textured and powder coated black, with machined cooling fins on the housing. The fins help move heat from the gear oil into the air, which matters when a heavy load keeps the axle working hard.

Finned aluminum covers are a common choice where heat is the concern, because the fins add surface area that helps the oil shed heat. The extra volume also gives the oil more room to work between changes.

Key features

  • Finned aircraft aluminum housing for improved cooling
  • Holds 2 extra quarts of oil, 5 quarts total
  • Overall height of 3 5/8 inches
  • Magnetic drain plug that traps worn gear material
  • Dipstick with a magnetic insert
  • Routine maintenance without removing the differential cover

Gear oil and heavy loads

Axle gear oil carries heat away from the ring gear and bearings, and the amount of oil matters most when the axle works hard. Towing, rock crawling and long grades raise temperatures, so a larger oil volume gives the lubricant more room to shed heat before it breaks down. Finned housings add surface area so heat leaves more easily.

Choose a gear oil suited to the axle and how the vehicle is used, and change it on a schedule that matches your driving. Check the magnetic drain plug and dipstick insert for metal at each service, since heavy buildup can point to gear or bearing wear. Keep mud clear of the fins so airflow is not blocked.

  • Use the gear oil type the axle requires
  • Inspect the magnetic drain plug at each service
  • Keep mud out of the fins

Questions & Answers

Does the AA14-11.5 fit GM and Chrysler AAM 11.5 rear axles?

Yes, it is made for GM and Chrysler AAM 11.5 inch rear axles. Confirm your axle size and type before ordering.

How much oil does it hold?

Five quarts in total, which includes 2 extra quarts over the standard level. The added volume gives the gear oil more room to shed heat during heavy use.

Can the oil be checked without removing the cover?

Yes. The dipstick has a magnetic insert, and Mag-Hytec says routine maintenance can be done without removing the differential cover. That keeps the oil check quick between services.

Does it need a gasket?

In most applications, no. The ARP 568 O-rings provide the seal, so a gasket or sealant is usually not needed. Clean both sealing faces before assembling the cover.

Does a finned cover replace the need for a cooler?

No. A finned cover helps the oil shed heat through the housing, but it does not replace a dedicated cooler on axles used for heavy towing or extended low-speed work. Keep the fins clean so airflow is not restricted.

How do you know when the gear oil needs changing?

Check the oil on the dipstick and look at the magnetic drain plug for fine metal. Dark, burnt-smelling oil or a heavy metal coating on the magnet suggests a change is due, and a sooner change makes sense after water crossings.
