Description

Overview

The G2 Ford Superduty Dana 60 Front Ball Milled Aluminum Cover (part 40-2034MBF) is a black cast aluminum front differential cover for 2005 and newer Ford Super Duty trucks with Dana 60 front axles.

The cover helps protect the ring and pinion and aids gear oil cooling for longer bearing life. It is cast from aluminum that is heat treated and shot peened to handle direct impacts, and its ball milled ribs add stiffness. It includes a filler plug, a fill level plug, a drain plug and a dipstick.

Key features

  • Cast lightweight aluminum body that helps dissipate heat
  • Ball milled reinforcing ribs for rigidity and strength
  • Heat treated and shot peened to withstand direct impacts
  • Fully machined seal surface
  • Filler plug, fill level plug and drain plug
  • Dipstick for simple maintenance
  • Black powder coat finish

Keeping the front cover in service

A differential cover is the sealing point for the front gears, so its condition matters as much as the gear oil inside. Check the gasket surface for nicks before installing, and clean the mating face of old sealer. A machined surface seals more reliably when it is free of debris.

Gear oil level is simple to check with the built-in plugs. After a fill, let the oil settle and confirm the level at the fill plug. Routine changes with the drain plug keep the gears protected, especially after towing or off-road use where heat builds up in the carrier.

Black powder coat resists scratches but can still chip near the bolt holes. A quick touch-up keeps corrosion from spreading under the coating. If the cover takes a hard hit on a rock, check for cracks at the ribs and at the bolt flange before returning to service.

  • Clean the mating surface before fitting
  • Inspect the ribs after any impact

Questions & Answers

Will the 40-2034MBF fit a 2005 Ford Super Duty?

Yes. It fits front Dana 60 axles on 2005 and newer Ford Super Duty trucks, covering the F-250 and F-350 Super Duty lines. Confirm your truck's year, model and trim before ordering.

Is this a front or rear Dana 60 cover?

Front. The product is a Dana 60 front differential cover, so it is not for the rear axle. Check the axle position on your truck before you order.

Does it hold more gear oil?

The cover has extra capacity, which helps cool the gear oil. After installing, check the fill level on the dipstick rather than assuming a standard fill.

What is the cover made of?

Lightweight aluminum, heat treated and shot peened to help it handle direct impacts. The finish is black powder coat, and the filler, fill level and drain plugs are built in.

What signs show the front gear oil needs changing?

Dark or metallic gear oil, a burnt smell after towing, or noise from the front axle are common signs. Check the level and inspect the fill, drain and dipstick areas for leaks. A change with fresh oil and a clean cover is a good time to inspect the gears.
