Description

Overview

The G2 AAM 9.25 Inch Front Ball Milled Aluminum Cover (part 40-2026MB) is a black cast aluminum differential cover for front AAM 9.25 inch axles only.

The cover helps cool the gear oil, which supports bearing life, while the ball milled ribs add rigidity. The aluminum is heat treated and shot peened to handle direct hits, and the seal surface is fully machined for a leak-free fit. It protects the ring and pinion and gives the front axle a finished look.

Key features

  • Cast from lightweight aluminum to dissipate heat from the gear oil
  • Ball milled reinforcing ribs for rigidity and strength
  • Heat treated and shot peened body for direct impacts
  • Fully machined seal surface
  • Filler plug, fill level plug and drain plug for service
  • Dipstick for simple maintenance
  • Black powder coat finish

Gear oil and cover service

A differential cover does more than seal the housing. It keeps dirt and water away from the ring and pinion, and it gives the gear oil more surface area to shed heat. Gear oil that runs hot breaks down faster, so a cover that helps the oil stay cooler supports the bearings and gears on steep grades and long highway runs alike.

Before fitting a cover, clean the old gasket material off the housing face and check that the flange is free of burrs. Use the filler and fill level plugs to set the oil at the correct level, then recheck it after a short drive. After trail use, look for dents, weeping at the seam and loose plugs, and tighten them rather than waiting for a leak.

  • Clean the housing face before fitting
  • Recheck oil level after a short drive
  • Inspect for dents, weeping and loose plugs after trail use

Questions & Answers

Is this a front or rear cover?

Front. It is made for front AAM 9.25 inch axles only, so it is not meant for a rear housing. Confirm your axle is a front AAM 9.25 inch unit before ordering.

Does the cover have a fill level plug?

Yes. It has a fill level plug for an accurate fill level, a separate filler plug for easy service and a drain plug for mess-free changes. The dipstick adds a simple oil check.

What is the cover cast from?

It is cast from lightweight aluminum and heat treated and shot peened to help it handle direct impacts. The cast body helps dissipate heat from the gear oil, which supports bearing life.

Will it fit a different front axle size?

No. It fits AAM 9.25 inch front axles only, so other axle sizes need their own covers. Check the axle size before ordering.

Should the mating face be cleaned before fitting?

Yes. Remove old gasket material and dirt from the housing face so the cover seats evenly. A clean, flat surface lets the machined seal surface do its job and helps avoid a leak.
