Open and limited slip carriers
Open and limited slip differentials look alike from the outside, but their internals are different, so the carrier type has to be confirmed before any gears are ordered. An open unit sends power to the wheel with less grip, while a limited slip uses clutches or other parts to share torque. Mixing the two kinds of internals can leave the carrier unable to work correctly.
If the carrier has already been opened, check the case markings and the existing gear pattern before buying a kit. Old parts can show the carrier type clearly, and keeping them for reference makes the new assembly easier to set up correctly.
