Overview
The G2 Axle and Gear Brute cover (part 40-2033MB) is a cast aluminum differential cover for traditional Dana 44 rear axles. It holds 2 to 2.5 quarts of fluid and has a ball-milled black finish.
The cover protects the ring and pinion and helps cool the gear oil. It is made from heat treated aluminum and shot peened to withstand direct hits. The seal surface is fully machined and uses an O-ring for a leak-free installation.

Gear oil and axle maintenance
A differential cover is the access point for the gear oil in the axle housing. Check the fluid level with the dipstick at intervals suited to your driving, and watch for signs of leaks at the cover gasket or seal. Change the gear oil when it looks dark or smells burnt, using the capacity range that fits your axle.
Magnetic parts help catch metal particles from the ring and pinion. Clean the magnets when you drain the oil and check them for fine debris, since a heavy buildup can point to wear in the gears or bearings. Replace the fluid after any major repair.
Dana 44 axles often run hard off road, so keep the axle breather and vent clear of mud. Check the cover bolts and seal periodically, especially after rocks or water crossings. Use a torque value suited to your axle when reinstalling the cover.
