Overview
The G2 Axle and Gear 40-2033AL is a cast aluminum differential cover for Dana 44 front or rear axles. G2 designed it to protect the ring and pinion while helping cool the gear oil for longer bearing life, and the raw aluminum finish adds a distinct look to the axle.
The cover is made from high strength heat treated aluminum to withstand direct hits. Its reinforcing ribs add rigidity, and the cover is heat treated and shot peened to help it handle a direct impact. The seal surface is fully machined.

Gear oil and axle care
The differential cover is part of the axle’s oil system, so its job goes beyond protection. Gear oil that runs cooler lasts longer and keeps the ring and pinion and bearings in better condition. Aluminum covers shed heat faster than steel, which helps when the axle works hard on long grades or in warm weather.
Between oil changes, check the cover and the surrounding housing for seepage around the gasket and bolts. A clean, dry seal surface is the first defense against leaks, so clean the mating surface completely when the cover comes off. Replace the gasket whenever the cover is removed.
Aluminum can be damaged by heavy impacts that bend a cover or crack a rib, so inspect after rock strikes. Keep the fill and drain plugs tight and use the gear oil type your axle requires.
