Key features

- Front or rear position listed
- Double shot peened and double lapped
- Computer heat treated 8620 steel
Ratio choice and the carrier
Choosing a ring and pinion ratio means balancing acceleration, cruising speed and fuel use against the tire size and the way the vehicle is used. A higher numerical ratio gives quicker response at low speed, while a lower one suits open highway driving. Tire diameter changes the effective ratio, so the two should be considered together.
A gear set is only part of the job. The pinion and carrier bearings, pinion crush sleeve and carrier shims are usually reused or replaced during a regear, and worn parts left in place can undo a good setup. Check each for play, pitting and heat discoloration before closing the housing. After installation, a short break-in with fresh gear oil helps the new teeth seat and gives a clearer tooth contact reading.
- Replace the pinion crush sleeve when the pinion nut is loosened
- Inspect carrier bearings and races for pitting
- Use gear oil with the friction additive the axle needs
- Recheck pinion nut torque after the first drives
