Overview
The G2 Axle and Gear 2-2013-456 is a 4.56 ratio ring and pinion for the Ford 8.8 inch rear axle. It fits the rear location and works with all ratio carriers, so the carrier does not limit the fit.
G2 describes its ring and pinion sets as built for oversized tires and high performance engines. The gears are made from computer heat treated 8620 steel with double shot peened and double lapped surfaces, to O.E. specifications.

Gear wear and break-in
Gear ratio is the main way to balance acceleration against highway cruising. A 4.56 set multiplies engine torque more than a numerically lower ratio, which helps when larger tires or towing add load. Larger tires also change the effective ratio, so many owners who change tire size look at gearing at the same time.
Ring and pinion gears wear through tooth contact, and most wear shows up as noise, heat or metal in the oil. Inspect the teeth, pinion bearings and carrier bearings whenever the cover is off. Replacing the pinion seal and carrier bearings during the swap is common, since the axle is already apart.
Pinion depth and backlash are set with shims and a spacer, so a driveline shop should check the gears after installation. A fresh set fitted without these checks may run loud or wear quickly.
- Check the pinion seal for leaks
- Inspect the carrier bearings during the swap
