Pinion bearing baffles and axle slingers are small shields that manage oil flow and keep contamination away from seals and bearings in Dana axles. This branch of Axle Parts lists baffles, pinion seal slingers, stub axle slingers and dust shields for Dana 30, 35, 44 and 60 applications. Dana Spicer, Crown Automotive and Omix-Ada are the brands. Check axle model and part numbers on each product page, then compare the products below.

What these parts do

Inside a Dana axle, small stamped parts steer oil and block dirt. A pinion bearing baffle sits near the pinion bearings to control how gear oil flows to them and reduce the chance of oil starving or flooding the area. A slinger is a spinning disc that flings oil, water and dirt away from a seal, which helps the seal last. Dust shields on the axle shaft keep debris away from the inner or outer seal and bearing area.

Where they go

  • Pinion head slinger: fitted on the pinion shaft behind the head bearing.
  • Pinion seal slinger: mounts at the yoke end, near the pinion seal.
  • Inner pinion bearing baffle: sits by the inner pinion bearing in the housing.
  • Stub axle slinger: used on front axle shafts such as in Dana 30 and Dana 60 front ends.
  • Inner and outer axle dust shields: fitted on axle shafts to protect the seal area.

Matching to your axle

These parts are very specific. Dana 30, 35, 44 and 60 axles use different baffles and slingers, and front and rear versions differ. Years and generations differ too, such as the Dana 44 front axle in later Wranglers. Identify your axle by the tag, cover shape and ring gear size, and cross-check the part number in the listing. Some items are listed in the catalog as pinion seals, so read titles and descriptions to see whether you are getting a slinger, baffle, seal or shield.

Installation notes

These parts are normally replaced when the differential or pinion is apart for a seal, bearing or gear job. Press fit parts must go on square and fully seated using the proper driver, as a bent slinger can rub or fail to protect the seal. Replace pinion seals, crush sleeves where applicable and bearings to specification, and set pinion preload and gear pattern correctly. Differential work needs specialized tools and setup skill, so a qualified gear shop is the safest option for many owners. Use the correct gear oil and fill level afterward.

Why do these small parts matter? In a Dana axle, the pinion shaft turns at high speed, and its seal and bearings live in a harsh environment of heat, dust and water. If a slinger is missing or bent, contamination can reach the seal and cause leaks, and the oil that escapes starves the bearings. A baffle that is out of position can leave the pinion bearings poorly lubricated. When rebuilding an axle, inspect these parts instead of assuming they are fine.

Look for signs of trouble before disassembly. Gear oil leaking at the pinion, a whining noise that changes with speed, metallic debris on the drain plug magnet and dirty or milky oil all point to problems that may involve the seal area. When you open the axle, clean parts thoroughly and examine the bearings and races for pitting. Use the correct sealing parts and sealant, replace single-use hardware such as crush sleeves or locking nuts and use a quality gear lubricant of the correct grade. Check the axle vent as well, since a clogged vent builds pressure and pushes oil past seals.

Differential Pinion Bearing Baffle and Axle Slingers FAQ

What does an axle slinger do?

A slinger is a rotating disc that throws oil, water and contaminants outward, away from a seal or bearing. This helps the seal last longer and keeps dirt out of the axle.

What is a pinion bearing baffle?

It is a stamped metal part that directs gear oil flow around the pinion bearings. By controlling how oil reaches the bearings, it helps lubrication and reduces problems from oil starvation or excess.

How do I know which Dana axle I have?

Look for the tag on the axle or the cover shape, measure the ring gear, and check the vehicle's documentation. Dana 30, 35, 44 and 60 parts are not interchangeable, so verify before choosing a baffle or slinger.

Can I install an axle slinger myself?

It is possible if you have the tools, but the parts usually go in when the pinion or axle is apart, and that job needs correct bearing preload and gear setup. A qualified gear shop is a safe choice.
