Description

Overview

The Crown Automotive 83503054 is a retainer ring seal for Dana 35 and Dana 44 rear axles. It fits the 1984 to 1989 Jeep Cherokee XJ, the 1986 to 1989 Jeep Comanche, the 1987 to 1989 Jeep Wrangler YJ and the 1999 to 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ.

A retainer ring seal sits at the retainer that holds the axle shaft in the housing, and it keeps gear oil from leaking out at that point. It installs at the rear position.

Replacing the rear retainer seal

The retainer ring seal is a small rubber-type part that works where the axle shaft passes through the retainer at the end of the housing. Gear oil sits inside the housing under pressure from heat and motion, so the seal has to hold steady at that point. Leaks usually show up as dark oil on the inside of the wheel or a dirty backing plate after a drive, and they tend to grow over time if the seal is hardened or nicked.

When the axle is open for another job, look at the retainer surface where the seal rides. A pitted or scored surface can wear a new seal quickly, so clean it and check it before fitting. Gear oil level matters too. Top up to the level marked on the housing once the seal is in, and check again after a few drives, since a seal that is just beginning to leak can look dry at first.

  • Check the retainer surface for scoring before fitting the new seal
  • Refill gear oil to the housing mark after installation

Questions & Answers

Is the Crown 83503054 a rear axle seal?

Yes. It is a rear position seal for Dana 35 and Dana 44 axles. Confirm fit for your vehicle's year, model and trim before ordering, since the Wrangler TJ and LJ and later Cherokee years are not covered.

Does this seal fit a Jeep Wrangler YJ?

Yes. It fits the 1987 to 1989 Jeep Wrangler YJ, in the Base, Islander, Laredo, S, Sahara and Sport trims. Confirm your vehicle's year, model and trim before ordering.

Which Grand Cherokee is on the list?

The 1999 to 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ, in the Laredo, Limited, Overland, Special Edition and Sport trims, is covered. The ZJ and WK Grand Cherokee are not covered, so check your model year before ordering.

How can I tell the retainer seal is leaking?

Look for gear oil on the inside of the wheel, on the backing plate or along the axle housing near the retainer. Oil that returns after cleaning usually points to a worn or hardened seal.
