Description

Overview

The Crown Automotive J0998092 is a front pinion seal for Dana 30 and Dana 44 front axles. It fits the 1984 to 1990 Jeep Cherokee XJ, 1976 to 1983 CJ5, 1976 to 1986 CJ7, 1986 to 1992 Comanche, 1974 to 1986 J10, 1981 to 1985 Scrambler and 1987 to 1990 Wrangler YJ.

The front pinion seal keeps gear oil in the differential where the pinion shaft passes through the front housing. It is for the front position only.

Pinion seal wear and checks

A pinion seal keeps gear oil in the front differential where the pinion shaft passes through the housing. Its lip hardens and wears over time, and a leaking seal can lower the oil level and let dirt in past the yoke. Leaks often show as oil on the front of the housing or on the inside of the tire.

Before replacing a pinion seal, check the yoke for grooves, since a rough yoke can cut into a new seal lip. Check the pinion bearing preload and the companion flange as well, because a loose flange can cause leaks. Use a seal driver so the lip is not damaged during installation.

  • Inspect the yoke for grooves
  • Check pinion bearing preload
  • Look at the companion flange nut
  • Clean the housing before fitting the seal

Questions & Answers

Does this pinion seal fit a Jeep Cherokee XJ?

Yes. It fits the 1984 to 1990 Jeep Cherokee XJ, in Base, Chief, Laredo, Limited, Pioneer and Sport trims. Confirm fit for your vehicle's year, model and trim before ordering.

Is this seal for a Dana 44 axle?

Yes, it fits both Dana 30 and Dana 44 front axles. The SJ and J-series models with a Model 44 front axle use a yoke, so check your yoke design before ordering.

Does it fit a Wrangler JK?

Confirm fit for your Wrangler JK before ordering. This seal is offered for the 1987 to 1990 Wrangler YJ among Wrangler models.

How can I tell whether a pinion seal is leaking?

Look for gear oil around the front differential, on the inside of the wheel, or along the yoke. A low fluid level in the front axle also points to a leaking seal. Replace the seal promptly, since low gear oil can damage the gears and bearings.
