Matching the hub and flange
The drive flange is the link between the axle shaft and the hub, so its splines and bolt pattern have to match the shaft and hub exactly. Worn splines show up as a slight clunk when the throttle changes, while a loose or cracked flange can cause vibration at speed. Because the flange is under constant torque, a close look at the spline wear and the threads is worth the time whenever the axle is opened.
When the flange is replaced, inspect the axle seal, the hub bearing and the axle shaft at the same time. A leaking seal can contaminate the hub and shorten the life of the new part. Use fresh threadlocker only where the fastener design calls for it, and keep the hub clean so the flange seats flat against the mating surface.
