Shackle reversal kits and replacement shackles are used on leaf spring suspensions, especially on older Jeep CJ and YJ models, to change spring geometry, add lift, or improve ride and articulation. The range includes greasable and non-greaseable designs and lift shackles from about half an inch to five inches. Brands include Daystar, Rubicon Express, and Trail Gear. What a spring shackle does

A leaf spring's rear (and sometimes front) eye attaches to the frame through a shackle, a swinging link that lets the spring change length as the axle moves. Shackle length and angle affect ride height, wheel travel, and how the spring behaves under load.

A longer shackle raises the vehicle slightly and softens the spring rate, while a reversal places the shackle at the front of the spring, which changes how the axle reacts to bumps and braking.

Shackle reversal explained

On a standard layout the shackle sits at the rear of the front spring. Reversing it, so the fixed end sits at the rear, is meant to improve the way the axle moves up and back over obstacles, and many owners report better ride on the trail. Kits typically include new brackets, shackles, and hardware.

Some kits are bolt-on and need no welding, while others require cutting or welding frame hardware, so read the product details first.

Choosing the right shackle

  • Greasable vs non-greaseable: Greasable shackles allow lubrication of the bushings, which helps reduce squeaks and wear.
  • Lift amount: Choose a length that matches your lift goals, and compare with the spring arch and shock length.
  • Width: Shackles come in narrow and wide versions to fit the spring pack and frame brackets.
  • Material: Look at fully welded tubing, zinc plating, and polyurethane or rubber bushings.

Installation and driveline

Support the frame on jack stands and the axle on a jack before removing hardware. Replace worn bolts and bushings with the new ones, and torque everything to specification with the vehicle at ride height. Changing shackle length alters pinion angle, brake line length, and driveline angles, so check them. Suspension changes affect handling and safety, so consider professional installation and an alignment check. Confirm fitment for your exact year, make, and model.

Before you start

Inspect the frame brackets, spring eyes, and bolts for cracks and wear, since fresh shackles will not help if the mounts are failing. Measure the existing shackle length and note the spring eye diameter and bolt size so the new parts match.

Plan for the related changes: shocks, bump stops, sway bar links, and the track bar may need to be adjusted when ride height changes. After the first drive, retorque the shackle bolts, since bushings settle. Grease greasable shackles at regular intervals and after water crossings.

Greasable shackles use drilled bolts with a grease fitting, so a grease gun can push lubricant into the bushing. Polyurethane bushings benefit from regular grease and can squeak if dry, while rubber bushings are quieter but may wear faster under hard use. Choose based on how the vehicle is driven.

Shackle width must match the spring eye and the shackle brackets. A narrow shackle on a wide spring pack, or the reverse, will bind. Lift shackles can also change the spring angle, so avoid stacking too much lift in one place without checking the other parts of the suspension.

Plan on retorquing all hardware after a few miles, and inspect the shackles after hard trail use. Bent shackles, cracked welds, and elongated holes are signs to replace parts immediately.

Shackle Reversal Kits FAQ

What is a shackle reversal?

It means relocating the shackle from the rear of a spring to the front, so the spring's fixed mount sits behind the shackle. The aim is smoother axle motion over bumps. Kits include the brackets and hardware.

Do I need greasable shackles?

They are not required, but they let you lubricate the bushings and bolts, which reduces noise and wear. Non-greaseable versions are simpler but may need replacement sooner in dirty or wet conditions.

Will longer shackles lift my Jeep?

A little. A longer shackle raises ride height by the amount stated for each product. Extra lift can change pinion angle and brake lines, so check driveline geometry afterward.

Is welding required for a reversal kit?

Some kits are bolt-on and need no welding, while others call for welding or cutting. The listing and the instructions say which. If welding is needed, a qualified fabricator is advisable.
