Overview
The Poison Spyder 17-05-010 is a pair of rear steel crusher flares for the Jeep Wrangler JK in two-door and four-door models. Poison Spyder lists them as a direct fit for the 2007–2018 model years, including the 70th and 75th Anniversary, Rubicon, Sahara, Sport, Sport S and X trims, with the Unlimited versions too.
The original rear flares are plastic, which can tear off and is easily damaged on the trail. These steel crusher flares replace them with precision-fabricated steel built for rough terrain. They provide tire coverage for up to a 40-inch tire. Trimming the inner sheet metal may be needed for tire clearance.
The mounting plate is CNC laser cut from 3/16-inch plate steel and brake-formed to fit the JK’s flare mounting surface. The rails are CNC bent 1.5 inch x .120 wall DOM structural tubing, and the fender surface is 1/8-inch laser cut plate steel. The rear flare includes a four-piece inner brace kit. The braces fit between the outer sheet metal and the heavier inner tub steel, so impacts carry into the Jeep’s structure.
The flares are bare steel, so the finish is up to the owner. Stainless steel countersunk flat head cap screws give a low profile and resist corrosion. Installation requires drilling and the nut-sert fasteners supplied with the kit, and a nut-sert installation tool is included.
Key features
- Provides tire coverage for up to a 40-inch tire
- CNC laser cut 3/16-inch steel mounting plate
- 1.5 inch x .120 wall DOM structural tubing rails
- Four-piece inner brace kit that carries impacts into the inner tub
- Countersunk stainless steel flat head cap screws
- Sold as a pair, bare steel
Clearance and inner braces
Rear flares protect the body where the tire meets the fender, and the sheet metal behind them takes the first impact in many trail situations. Heavier steel changes how that load is shared. The inner braces carry part of it into the inner tub, so the flare is not the only point of support.
Tire clearance depends on tire size, suspension and bump stops, not only on the flare. Test the fit at full compression and full droop before drilling. Trim the inner sheet metal only where needed, and keep wiring and brake lines away from the cut area.
Steel flares add weight at the rear, so pair them with a sturdy tire carrier and a stable bumper to keep loads balanced. Inspect the nut-serts and cap screws after the first few trail runs, since they carry the most stress when the Jeep flexes.
- Test fit at full compression and droop
- Keep brake lines and wiring clear of cuts
- Check nut-serts after the first trail runs
- Match tire carrier and bumper to the flares
