Description

Overview

The Poison Spyder 18-56-025 is a heavier replacement for the factory trans-mount cross member on 2012–2015 Jeep Wrangler JK models. It works with automatic or manual transmissions and fits 2-door and 4-door bodies.

The factory cross member uses 1/8-inch sheet metal on top and 14-gauge stamped metal below. This part has a top plate 33% thicker and a bottom plate twice as thick, both in 3/16-inch steel.

External dimensions and bolt locations match the factory unit, so the mounting stays the same. Aftermarket skid systems that attached to the stock cross member should still attach to this one. The corners are brake-formed with no box-corner welds, which helps the plate resist dents and bends. The heavier 3/16-inch bottom plate is better suited to rock strikes than the 14-gauge factory piece. It arrives in bare steel for painting or powder coating in the color of your choice.

Key features

  • 3/16-inch steel top and bottom plates
  • Brake-formed corners, no box-corner welds
  • Four DOM tubing spacers
  • Matches the factory external dimensions and bolt locations
  • Works with automatic and manual transmissions
  • 2-door and 4-door models

Skid plate and frame mounting

A transmission cross member carries load from the drivetrain to the frame and often holds skid plates in place. On a trail rig, the cross member takes hits from rocks and stumps, so the metal thickness and corner forming matter. Thicker plates resist bending better, though heavier parts add weight to the front of the vehicle.

Before bolting it in, clean the mounting holes and check that the factory skid hardware is in good condition. Bare steel rusts quickly, so paint or powder coat it before installation to protect the metal. After the first few drives, re-check the mounting bolts and look for cracks at the corners.

  • Paint or powder coat before mounting
  • Check skid plate hardware before reuse
  • Re-check bolts after the first drives
  • Inspect corners after hard impacts

Questions & Answers

Will the 18-56-025 fit a 2012–2015 Jeep Wrangler JK?

Yes. It fits 2012–2015 Jeep Wrangler JK models in both 2-door and 4-door bodies, with automatic or manual transmission. Confirm your year, model and trim before installing.

Does it fit a 2007–2011 JK?

No. This part number is for 2012-2015 models only. The 2007-2011 JK years are a different part number, so check the year before choosing this cross member.

Does it work with a manual transmission?

Yes. It works with either manual or automatic transmissions on 2012–2015 JK models, so transmission type is not a limit for this cross member.

Do I need to change the transmission mount when installing a cross member?

Usually the transmission mount stays in place, but inspect the rubber bushings and fasteners when the cross member is removed. Replace any cracked or collapsed bushings so the drivetrain stays aligned.

How do I know when the cross member needs replacing?

Look for cracked welds, bent plates, or a skid plate that shifts under load. Any of these signs means the cross member should be checked and repaired or replaced before further trail use.
