Ball joint wear and service
Ball joints carry the weight of the front end and let the steering knuckle pivot, so wear shows up as play, clunks over bumps or uneven tire wear. A complete set helps keep both sides matched, because a new joint on one side next to a worn joint on the other can make the steering feel uneven.
Greasable joints need the fitting and seal checked before each trail season. Wipe the fitting clean before pushing grease in, and look for a torn boot that lets grit in. Once installed, check the alignment, since joint replacement can shift toe and caster. Tie rod ends are often inspected at the same time, and the steering damper and track bar should be reviewed for wear.
Lift height or larger tires change the angles the joints work at, so a lift or bigger tires can speed wear. Recheck the joints after the first few drives and at each oil change.
