Gasket installation tips
A cover gasket only seals well when both mating faces are clean and flat. Scrape off old gasket material with a plastic scraper, remove oil and grit from the bolt holes, and check the cover for warping. Bolts should be tightened in a crisscross pattern so the cover pulls down evenly onto the new gasket.
Gear oil level matters after the cover goes back on. Fill to the level mark, then check for leaks after a short drive and again once the vehicle has cooled. If a leak appears near the cover edge, recheck bolt tension and gasket seating before adding sealant, since excess sealant can squeeze into the housing.
