Overview
The Dana Spicer 46485 is a Dana 35 outer axle seal for the 1988 to 1989 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) with bill of material #605455.
Signs the seal needs replacing
An outer axle seal keeps gear oil inside the axle and keeps water and grit out of the wheel end. Most leaks show up as dark gear oil on the inside of the wheel, on the backing plate, or on the brake shoes and drum. Because the seal sits next to the brakes, oil contamination can reduce braking performance, so a leak should be addressed quickly.
When replacing an outer seal, inspect the bearing, hub and axle shaft surfaces for wear or grooves that could cause the new seal to leak. Clean the housing bore and remove any old sealant or burrs. Pack the bearing as the procedure calls for and check the lubricant level afterward.
- Oil on the inside of the wheel
- Brake parts coated with gear oil
- Grooves or wear on the axle shaft seal surface
