Wheel bearing seal care
The outer wheel bearing seal keeps grease in the bearing and water and road dirt out. Because the seal sits at the wheel end, it is exposed to heat from braking and to spray from the road, so it wears from both sides. A seal that has run dry or low on grease can damage the bearing quickly.
When the hub is apart, inspect the bearing rollers, race and cup for pitting or heat marks, and check the seal bore for scoring. A new seal should seat square and be pressed in evenly, since a cocked seal can leak on the first drive. Repack the bearing with the grease the hub calls for.
