Replacing the outer seal
An outer axle seal sits at the end of the axle tube and keeps lubricant in and water and grit out around the axle shaft. Heat, contact with the shaft and age can cause the lip to harden or crack, which allows leaks onto the hub and brake area. Leaks often show up first as dark residue on the inside of the wheel.
When replacing the seal, check the shaft surface where the lip rides for grooves or pitting. A rough shaft can wear a new seal quickly. Pack the seal lip lightly and install it squarely so the spring stays seated, and replace the seal whenever the bearings or shaft are serviced.
