Description

Overview

The Crown Automotive J0908226 is a steering knuckle seal kit for Dana 25 and Dana 27 front axles. It suits both the driver and passenger sides and fits a range of Jeep and Willys vehicles from 1941 to 1973.

Crown Automotive supplies the kit with 4 retaining plates, 2 felt seals and 2 rubber seals, a set that covers both knuckles.

Key features

  • Steering knuckle seal kit for the front axle
  • For Dana 25 or 27 front axles
  • For driver and passenger side
  • Includes retaining plates, felt seals and rubber seals
  • Direct-fit design

Front knuckle seal service

The steering knuckle seals keep grease in the knuckle bearing area and keep road water and grit out of the hub. On a Dana 25 or 27, the felt and rubber seals sit behind retaining plates, so a leak can show up as grease on the brake drum or dampness at the hub. Leaking seals left alone can let the bearings run dry and wear the knuckle bushings sooner.

Seal kits are usually installed when the knuckles are opened for bushing or bearing work, so plan the job around the whole front end. Clean the knuckle bore and sealing surfaces before fitting new seals, and pack the bearings with an appropriate grease. Check the steering for play after reassembly.

  • Look for grease on the brake drum or backing plate
  • Check the knuckle bushings for wear
  • Clean sealing faces before fitting

Questions & Answers

Which axles is the Crown J0908226 for?

Dana 25 and Dana 27 front axles. The kit covers both driver and passenger side knuckles, so one kit services both sides of the front axle.

What comes in the J0908226 kit?

The kit includes 4 retaining plates, 2 felt seals and 2 rubber seals. That is enough to seal both front steering knuckles.

Does the J0908226 fit a CJ5?

Yes, for the 1959–1971 Jeep CJ5. It also fits the CJ6, Commando, Gladiator, Wagoneer and several Willys models. Check the year and model range against your vehicle before ordering.

Should both knuckle seals be replaced together?

Usually yes. Seals on both sides of a front axle age at similar rates, and the kit is sized for both knuckles. Replacing them in one job avoids reopening the knuckle and keeps both sides matched.
