Overview
The Crown Automotive 83502961 is a 15 gallon rear-mounted replacement gas tank for the 1987–1990 Jeep Wrangler (YJ). It is made of polyethylene and fits 2.5L fuel-injected, four-cylinder engines. It is a direct fit.
The tank comes with an o-ring and lock ring and works with the existing hardware, so the original fittings at the tank are reused. It fits Base, Islander, Laredo, S, Sahara and Sport trims.

Fuel system checks
A polyethylene tank is light and resists rust, which makes it a practical choice for a Wrangler YJ that sees wet and salty conditions. It does not corrode like steel, but it can still be damaged by sharp contact or heavy impact, so the mounting area should be checked for pinch points before the tank is set in place.
When the tank is out, the rest of the fuel system is easy to inspect. The fuel pump sender, filler hose, vent lines and clamps are the usual parts to examine. Replace any hose that is hard, cracked or swollen, and make sure the lock ring seats fully so the tank cannot shift during use.
