Fuel tank safety and care
A fuel tank holds a volatile liquid, so safe handling matters as much as fit. Empty the old tank as far as practical before removing it, keep sparks and open flames away, and work in a ventilated area. Old tanks often hold rust and sediment, so inspect the inside of the replacement for debris before connecting the lines.
Steel tanks can rust from the inside, especially in vehicles that sit for long periods with a small amount of fuel. Check the sending unit connections, the fuel lines and the filler neck clamps for signs of seepage once the tank is in place. Refill slowly and check every joint for leaks before starting the engine.
- Inspect the new tank for debris before fitting
- Check fuel lines and clamps for cracks
- Keep a fire extinguisher nearby during work
- Look for leaks at all joints after refilling
