Overview
The Crown Automotive 83501009 is an inner axle shaft seal for the Dana 44 axle, with a 2-5/8 inch outside diameter. It fits the 1977 to 1983 Cherokee SJ, the 1984 to 1991 Grand Wagoneer SJ, the 1977 to 1990 Wagoneer SJ and the 1977 to 1988 J10 and J20 trucks.

Inner seal replacement checks
An inner axle shaft seal keeps gear oil inside the housing where the shaft enters. Once the seal lip wears or hardens, oil can seep onto the brake components, and the linings can be ruined. Seals on older axles often leak after years of use, so the seal should be checked whenever the shaft is out.
Before fitting the new seal, clean the bore and remove any burrs or old sealant. Coat the lip with fresh gear oil, drive the seal in square to the housing, and confirm it sits flush. Check the bearing for roughness and the shaft surface for grooves, since a damaged shaft can wear through a new seal quickly.
