Pilot bearing wear and removal
The pilot bearing supports the front of the transmission input shaft in the crankshaft bore. Over time it can wear, causing a rough or whining feel when the clutch is released, or a slight wobble at the input shaft. A worn bearing is usually found during a clutch job, since removal requires the transmission to come out.
Removing the old bearing usually calls for a puller or slide hammer with the correct adapter. Check the bore for scoring or wear before pressing in the new bearing, since a rough bore can keep the bearing from seating square. Clean the bore and lightly lubricate the new bearing as the clutch kit instructions allow.
- Whining or rough feel when the clutch is released
- Input shaft wobble noticed at the bell housing
- Scoring or wear inside the crankshaft bore
