Choosing a gooseneck setup
A gooseneck center section carries the trailer’s kingpin load into the truck frame, so it works hard every time you tow. The ball and locking pin take the most daily wear, but the frame connection matters just as much. Since this center section bolts into existing frame holes instead of relying on added brackets, check those holes and the surrounding frame for cracks or elongation before each heavy hitch-up.
When choosing a setup, match the center section to the gooseneck coupler you actually run, and keep ball size consistent across the trailer and hitch. Work the locking pin by hand to confirm smooth spring action and full engagement, and replace a worn pin rather than shimming it. Balls that show scoring or flat spots are usually replaced along with the coupler.
