Description

Overview

The TeraFlex 4920255 is a heavy-duty high steer tie rod kit with stock taper tie rod ends for the 1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ and 2004-2006 Wrangler Unlimited LJ. It is made for steering systems that use the TeraFlex High Steer Knuckle, and it is intended for the TeraFlex Dana 30 High Steer Knuckle.

The tube is 1-1/2″ hexagon 6061 T6 aluminum. This alloy has a higher specific strength than 1018 steel, a yield strength of 45,000 lbs, and is three times lighter than steel while deflecting three times further before returning to shape. The hex profile lets a 1-1/2″ wrench hold the tube while the jam nuts are tightened.

Key features

  • 1-1/2″ hexagon 6061 T6 aluminum tube
  • Yield strength of 45,000 lbs, at one-third the weight of steel
  • Hex shape allows a 1-1/2″ wrench to hold the tube when tightening jam nuts
  • Heavy-duty tie rod ends with a one-ton joint end
  • Stock Jeep taper ends fit Dana 30 knuckle holes

Steering geometry after the swap

A high steer tie rod moves part of the steering linkage ahead of the axle centerline, which changes how the tie rod ends work through suspension travel. When the axle articulates, the rod pushes and pulls the knuckle arms, so its length and alignment decide how evenly the wheels turn. Changing tie rod length moves the toe setting, so have the front end checked on an alignment rack once the kit is in place. Tighten the jam nuts only after the ends are centered on their threads.

Tie rod ends are wear items. Lift the front tire and feel for movement at each joint, then look for torn boots and grease leaks. Aluminum resists corrosion, but the threaded ends and clamp hardware still need inspection at regular service intervals. Looseness, wander or uneven tire wear are signs that steering parts need attention.

  • Measure toe before and after the swap
  • Re-check jam nut tightness after the first drive
  • Inspect boots and joint seals each season
  • Replace worn tie rod ends as a pair when one shows play

Questions & Answers

What is the TeraFlex 4920255?

It is a heavy-duty aluminum high steer tie rod kit with stock taper tie rod ends, made for Jeep steering systems that use the TeraFlex High Steer Knuckle.

Will the 4920255 fit a Jeep Wrangler TJ?

Yes. It fits the 1997-2006 Wrangler TJ and the 2004-2006 Wrangler LJ, and it is made for use with the TeraFlex Dana 30 High Steer Knuckle.

What taper are the tie rod ends?

The ends use the stock Jeep taper, which fits Dana 30 knuckle holes. TeraFlex also makes a large one-ton taper, the standard Dana 60 size, for the larger 60 type knuckles.

What size wrench holds the tube?

A 1-1/2" wrench. The hexagon tube shape lets a wrench grip the tube while the jam nuts are tightened, which keeps the tube from spinning during adjustment.

Does a high steer tie rod need an alignment?

Yes. Changing tie rod length alters toe, so have the front end aligned after installation. Check the setting on an alignment rack before driving on the highway.

How do I tell if the tie rod ends are worn?

Lift the front tire and check for movement at each joint, then look for torn boots or grease leaks. Steering wander, loose feel or uneven tire wear can also point to worn ends. Replace worn ends rather than running them until they fail.
