Description

Overview

The TeraFlex 3442022 is a four-joint ball joint set, two uppers and two lowers, for the front Dana 30 and Dana 44 axles on the Jeep Wrangler JK. The knurl helps the joint seat in a knuckle bore that has become loose from earlier replacements, and it suits loose press fits in the inner knuckle. The joints fit 2007–2011 JK axles.

The upper joint uses a sintered wear bushing that TeraFlex designed for heavy side loads. The lower joint has a threaded top cap for adjustable preload and a grease passage that lets the joint be greased without taking the axle shaft out. The ball and stud are 4140 chrome moly with a magnesium phosphate coating, and the housing is 1045 carbon steel.

Key features

  • Four-joint set: two upper and two lower
  • Knurled for loose press fits in the knuckle
  • Sintered upper bushing for heavy side loads
  • Threaded top cap and grease passage on the lower joint
  • Black neoprene boot and factory-style castle nut

Loose knuckle bores

The knurled joint suits a knuckle bore that has grown loose, which can happen after several joint replacements. Knurling gives the joint something to grip when a smooth press fit no longer holds. It is a fit choice for worn knuckles rather than a standard for every build, so the bore condition should drive the decision.

Inspect and measure the bore before installing. Look for scoring, ovaling or a joint that spins in place. If the knuckle is worn beyond what a knurled joint can grip, replacing the knuckle is a more reliable fix. Grease the joint after installation, and recheck the castle nut torque after the first few drives.

  • Inspect the bore for scoring or ovaling
  • Use knurled joints only when the bore is loose
  • Grease the joint after the first few drives

Vehicle fitment

Installation notes

Use the knurled set only when the bore is loose, since non-knurled joints suit most knuckles. A knurl can score the inner knuckle if it is used in a tight bore.

Questions & Answers

Will the TeraFlex 3442022 fit a 2010 Jeep Wrangler JK?

Yes. These joints fit 2007–2011 JK models, and 2010 falls inside that range. Confirm the Dana 30 or Dana 44 front axle before ordering.

When is the knurled version the right choice?

Choose the knurled set when the ball joint has a loose press fit in the inner knuckle, which can happen after repeated replacements. A tight bore is better served by the non-knurled set.

How many joints come in the set?

Four joints: two upper and two lower. That is enough for both front sides of one vehicle. Each side needs one upper and one lower, so this covers the full front end.

Can the lower joint be greased in place?

Yes. The lower joint has a machined grease passage and a threaded top cap, which allows greasing without removing the axle shaft.

How can I tell if a knuckle bore is worn?

A worn bore often shows as a ball joint that spins or moves in the knuckle, or a joint that feels loose when pressed in. Measure the bore and check for scoring or oval wear with the joint removed. Replace or repair the knuckle when the bore is out of tolerance, since a loose joint will not hold position under load.
