Trail repair and replacement arms
A control arm can be bent or cracked by a rock strike, a hard landing or a rollover, and the damage is not always visible from the outside. Because the arm locates the axle, even a small bend can change caster, pinion angle and steering feel. Replacing a damaged arm with one that matches the original geometry helps keep the axle tracking straight.
Inspect the arm’s tube for dents, kinks and cracks, and check the ends for play or torn boots. Measure the arm’s length against the other side if they are sold as a pair. When arms are replaced, check the alignment and the axle’s position at ride height, since a new arm can shift the setup even when it is installed correctly.
- Sight down the tube for bends and kinks
- Check both arms of the pair for matching length
- Check alignment after replacing an arm
