Restoring self adjust action
On 10 inch rear drums, the self adjust lever keeps the shoes at the right distance from the drum as the lining wears. When this action stops, the shoes can drag or the parking brake can feel slack, and many owners notice the problem only after the pedal starts to travel further. Restoring the adjuster usually means cleaning the mechanism and replacing any worn lever at the same time.
Work carefully around the adjuster spring and the star wheel, since they hold tension and can fly loose during removal. Check that the lever returns to its rest position after each adjustment test, and test the parking brake with the wheel turned by hand before lowering the vehicle.
