Adjuster lever wear
A self adjuster lever moves a pawl across the star wheel each time the brakes are applied, taking up lining wear a little at a time. Over many miles the pawl teeth can round off, and the lever can slip past the star wheel instead of advancing it. The result is brakes that need manual adjustment or a pedal that gets softer as the miles build up.
When replacing a lever, check the pivot pin, the return spring and the star wheel teeth at the same time, since a worn partner part can wear a new lever quickly. Clean rust from the pivot and use a light coat of grease where the lever contacts the adjuster. Make sure the lever sits in the same position as the old one before reassembly.
