Self adjust lever wear
A brake shoe self adjust lever moves with each application and turns the adjuster that keeps the shoe close to the drum. Its pivot takes most of the wear, so a lever with a worn hole or a groove at the contact point can let the adjustment drift. The lever also works with the return springs, so a weak spring can make a sound lever appear to fail.
During a drum service, look at the lever pivot, the arm and the spring hooks together. Clean off dust and old grease, then check that the lever returns smoothly without play. Working on both sides at the same time makes it easier to see whether the wear is even.
