Adjuster lever wear and inspection
The adjuster lever transfers movement from the cable or the actuator to the star wheel. It works under constant load, so it can wear at the pivot or bend if the drum has been dragging or the adjuster has been forced. A worn lever may fail to advance the shoes, which lets clearance grow and the pedal travel increase.
When the drums come off, look at the lever pivot for play, check the spring and make sure the tooth engages the star wheel cleanly. Clean old grease and debris from the assembly before reassembly, and keep lubricant light on the pivot and away from the shoe faces.
