Overview
The G2 Axle and Gear 4-XJ2-456 is a 4.56 ring and pinion kit for the front and rear axles of the 1984–2001 Jeep Cherokee (XJ), with a Dana 30 reverse front and a Dana 35 rear. It is a second part number carrying the same listed specifications as the 4-XJ-456.
The kit includes front and rear gear sets and the installation kits for both axles, supplied as matched master installation kits. The gears are computer heat treated 8620 steel, manufactured to O.E. specifications, double shot peened and double lapped. The kit carries a limited lifetime warranty.

Choosing a ring and pinion setup
A ring and pinion set changes the final drive ratio, so the gear ratio and the carrier must work together. Before buying, check the existing carrier on each axle, since the front and rear gears need carriers of different minimum ratings. A mismatched carrier can prevent the gears from seating correctly.
Ring and pinion work is precise. Pinion depth, preload and backlash are set on each axle separately, and a change in one setting affects the others. Matched master installation kits help keep those settings consistent, but the setup still needs careful measuring and a dial indicator.
Gear sets often wear unevenly on the drive side and coast side of the teeth. When a gear set is replaced, a new bearing set and a fresh pinion nut are commonly replaced at the same time to avoid a second teardown.

The 4-XJ2-456 does not cover other Jeep models or an XJ with other axles. Confirm your vehicle’s year, model and trim before ordering.
Installation notes
With the 4-XJ2-456 each axle needs its own pinion depth, preload and backlash setup, supported by the master installation kits. The front gears want a 3.73 and up carrier and the rear gears a 3.54 and up carrier. Gear work is best left to an experienced installer.
